Layer Cake Shiraz - $16.99
Layer Cake Shiraz is produced in South Australia which is one of the top shiraz-growing regions of the world. It is made with grapes from the McLaren Vale. All vineyards are mere miles apart, yet they give the desired complexity to the end product.
The winemakers use non-interventionist winemaking practices, by treating the grapes with great care; they neither add nor take away from the resulting product. The Layer Cake shiraz is intense, dark and creamy, with concentrated coffee, plum and blackberry flavor, and a smoky finish. It is "one of best shiraz wines on the market," according and a terrific value for the price.
Steven Tanzer's International wine cellar gave the Layer Cake Shiraz 89 points and wrote that it is "Very easy to drink, with no excess fat but a load of fresh berry compote flavors and very good persistence."
Ique Malbec 2007 - $12.99
Another excellent wine from the award winning Argentinian winemaker Enrique "Ique" Foster, who used to head the Norton Bodega before acquiring his own estate. This Malbec is chewy and complex, and has plenty of zin-like spice and vibrant fruit.
Ique Malbec displays some of the best qualities of Argentinian Malbec that have made it into a national varietal, while remaining extremely affordable.
From Wine Advocate:
100% Malbec from vines averaging 30 years or more, Ique is unoaked, fresh, young and fruity. An intense ruby-red color leads to firm structure, soft lush tannins and a delightful finish. This pairs well with meat, pasta and cheese and is a great match with summer barbecues! "Best Buy"
Jacuzzi Cabernet Sauvignon 2007
We are really excited about this Cabernet. It is rich and yet mild, and possesses a firm backbone of tanings. It is an excellent California cabernet, done in an old world style, and it is organically and sustainably grown. This wine has lots of staying power and complexity in a medium to full body. If you like Cabernent Sauvignon, we am convinced that you will enjoy this purchase.
From Wine.com:
"Wonderful bright blackberry and nuances of herb combine with vanilla and carmel from the oak. This is a full-bodied red with ample tannin and great fruit. Pair with a grilled steak or pepper-crusted Salmon."
This wine can be found for over $20 and even $30 in other places, but at Ken and Norm's we were able to bring it in at only $17.99! It is a fantastic deal!
